Questions

What people ask us, and the plain answers

If yours is not here, call or write. We would rather answer it than leave you wondering.

First days

What should I do right now?

Write down what happened while you still remember it, keep every paper you were given and don't talk about it with anyone but us. Then call.

Should I talk to the other side or the police?

Please don't until we've talked. You can decline to answer and ask for a lawyer, and doing so is not an admission of anything.

I was just given a date to appear. Do I have to go?

Yes. Missing a court date can lead to a warrant and make things worse. If you can't make it, call us first, and we will see what can be done.

Money

How do you charge?

We quote a fee in writing for each stage of a case before we start it. A first-stage fee covers the early work: records, video, witnesses and a first talk with the prosecutor. We explain what is and is not included.

Can I pay in installments?

Often, yes. We write the plan down so you know each amount and date. Court costs, fines and bond are separate and are paid to the court or the bond company.

Can you promise a result?

No. Nobody honest can. We can promise to read everything, ask hard questions and tell you the truth about your options.

Spanish

Do you work in Spanish?

Ludivina Mondragon and Reynaldo Soliz do, with clients and with their families. Orval Haskew works in English, and one of them joins any meeting that should be in Spanish.

Will I get my papers in Spanish?

Our letters and summaries go out in the language you prefer. Court papers are usually in English, so we go through them with you in Spanish.

The case

How long will this take?

It depends on the charge and the court. Some end in a few weeks, others take a year or more. We tell you what the next stage is and how long we expect it to run.

Will I have to go to trial?

Most cases do not end in a trial, but that is a choice that belongs to you. We prepare every case as if it might, because that is what gives you a better offer.

Will you tell my employer or my family?

No, unless you ask us to. What you tell us stays between you and the firm.

Which cases do you not take?

We handle drug, assault, theft and juvenile cases. For immigration, divorce or anything outside those areas, we tell you on the first call and point you to someone who does.

Not on this list?

Call and ask it. A lawyer or a paralegal will answer, and nobody will rush you.
